We are a group of Registered Herbalists and Naturopathic Doctors. While at school, we worked our butts off to get educated in botanical medicine, only to find out that the big guys out there had made herbs too expensive and complicated for our patients to use effectively.

So we started tincturing our own herbs and soon our friends asked us to start doing the same for them. Our company was born and the rest is history. Our mission is to keep high-quality herbs accessible, affordable, and sustainable.

FAQ

What is an NPN and why do I need one?

NPNs, or Natural Product Numbers, are what you need if you want to make a Natural Health Product, or NHP. In order to make health claims for your product, you need to have an NPN. Having an NPN also guarantees that your product adheres to a high standard of manufacturing quality. In order to have an NPN, your product must be produced in an accredited Health Canada site-licensed facility.

What’s the difference between an NHP and a non-NHP?

An NHP has fulfilled all the Health Canada required manufacturing standards (usually referred to as GMPs), and has been approved as having validated health claims. A non-NHP product may still be made to the same standards (and always is, at our facility) but lacks the certification, and cannot make health claims. For example, a non-NHP valerian tincture will still have all the same actual benefits as an NHP valerian tincture, but you wouldn’t be allowed to claim that it’s good for sleep.

What specific tests are done on a first-run NHP, and how much do they cost?

Each batch requires microbiology testing, heavy metal testing, and pesticide testing. For the initial batch, this will be performed over a series of time and different conditions according to the stability protocol, which is based on the desired expiration date. We can provide a quote for the cost of lab testing depending on the expiration date, but typically it’s in the range of a few thousand dollars. We will utilize our trusted third-party labs for which we’ve comparison-shopped, and we typically don’t generate any profit on this, we just pass along the base costs.

Do I have to run all those tests?

If the ingredients used are certified organic, pesticide testing can be omitted. Otherwise, for NHPs, yes, all the tests must be run.

Will Perfect Herbs run the tests for me, or do I have to arrange it myself?

Each batch requires that a certain number of samples be sent to a lab for testing. We can send the required samples directly to the labs we use, or, if you like and request it, we can ship them to any lab of your choice. The most important thing is to make sure that you have the required testing and documentation for the batch. We will help you with all this!

Are you guys licensed to manufacture Natural Health Products?

Yes! We have the privilege of being one of a handful of companies accredited by Health Canada in this way.

Can I supply my own bottles and labels?

For sure! We have stock bottles and labels that we use in-house, but we have many people we work with who have their own unique bottle or label for their finished product. We’re flexible to whatever you like on this.

Can you ship the final products for me, or do I have to pick it up and ship it myself?

That’s up to you. We’re set up to ship directly anywhere you like, but you’re also welcome to handle the distribution yourself. We’re required to complete the production and packaging of an NHP on site, but after the final sealing, it’s your choice. We typically recommend pick-up so that we know for sure it’s reached you safely.

I don’t have an NPN for my product yet. What should I do?

If you don’t wish to produce NHPs, you don’t need to do anything. If you want to make health claims, then you should get an NPN. Depending on your product, obtaining an NPN may be straightforward – as is the case for single herbs where other companies already have an NPN – or it may take much longer if your product is novel to the market or uses herbs without sufficient research to back the health claims you’d like to make. Your first step is to visit the Health Canada website and see what monographs exist. From there, you may decide to apply on your own, or you might consider hiring a consultant to help you with your application. We may be able to assist you ourselves, depending on the complexity involved. The process can take as little as a couple months, but as long as a year.

My friend grows one of the herbs I’d like to use at her farm. Can I use this in my product?

Well, maybe! We’d need to confirm that the herb you’re using is indeed the actual herb. Genetic confirmation of the species may be required in order to generate the COA (Certificate of Authenticity) required for proper record keeping.

Do you have experience in shipping to an Amazon warehouse?

Yes, and we know how to follow best practices here, including some efficiency optimizations.

Do you have a set pricing structure for manufacturing, packaging and labeling?

All of this information would be provided for you on your quote, and depending on your exact needs. Some customers prefer to do their own packaging or labeling, so it really depends on what you want.

Do you have an in-house design team?

Yes, we have an in-house design team, but we’re not graphic designers. We’re closer to “we can use Canva” as opposed to “we can use Photoshop.” We can assist you, make suggestions, and point you in the right direction.

Are there production minimums?

No. No production minimums. No Minimum Order Quantities (MOQs). We keep it easy.

What are lead times?

The answer everyone hates to hear: it depends. But generally, we are small and nimble. We can manufacture your product immediately, on the spot. We typically have turn-around times of a few weeks for simple projects, but we will advise you on all the steps and timelines as they pertain to your product.

Do you offer warehousing as well?

We may have this ability, but we generally don’t suggest it. We can discuss this with you on a case-by-case basis.

Can we forward an individual website order and you ship the product to the consumer?

We may have this ability, but we generally don’t suggest it. We can discuss this with you on a case-by-case basis.

Can you dropship from sales on my website and/or Etsy shop and how does that work?

We may have this ability, but we generally don’t suggest it. We can discuss this with you on a case-by-case basis.

Can you source custom packaging if I provide examples of what I am looking for?

Yes, we could assist you with this, leveraging our existing supplier network.

How is my intellectual property (IP) protected?

We are happy to sign a Non-Disclosure Agreement (NDA) with you. We have strict privacy policies and we never divulge customer information.

Can you provide a client history or portfolio of products?

We don’t disclose customer information, but we can provide you with some selected references from customers who have agreed to share that information.

Can you ship to the US?

Yes.

Who will be the point-of-contact? Is there an account manager?

You will have an account manager who will be your point of contact. Your contact will keep you fully informed and updated, answer any questions, and walk you through the entire process of manufacturing from start to finish.

What do you need from me?
